Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert is set to become the ‘highest-paid player in NFL history’ as he has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract extension with the team. The reports suggest that the deal to remain with the Chargers will pay him USD 262.5 million. The NFL star has two years left of his rookie deal, which means that he is now under a contract of seven years.

According to ESPN, the 25-year-old’s contract-extension deal comprises a no-trade clause, along with a $133.7 million and $193.7 million come-in injury guarantee. The historic deal of Herbert surpasses Lamar Jackson’s contract extension he signed for Baltimore Ravens three months ago.  Herbert’s deal extension comes just a day before the Chargers kicked off their training camp.

LA Chargers’ General Manager, Tom Telesco, earlier talked to ESPN about Herbert and was quoted as saying, “I sleep better at night knowing we have a franchise quarterback. He's done so much already in his young career, yet we all know there's still a lot there because of his commitment to the game.”

Notably, Herbert has been a part of the Chargers since 2020 and joined as the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft. He has played 49 games out of a possible 50, accumulating 14,089 yards along the way. The quarterback has thrown 94 touchdowns and only 35 interceptions during his NFL career.
