During the second ODI of the three-match series between Sri Lanka and India, Kamindu Mendis took a one-handed stunner to dismiss Shubman Gill at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, August 4. In pursuit of the 241-run target, India got off to a fantastic start with their openers before some magic in the field brought Sri Lanka back into the contest.
The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill stitched together a 97-run stand for the first wicket in just 14 overs on a pitch which started to become difficult for batting as the Indian innings progressed. Jeffrey Vandersay, the Sri Lanka leg-spinner, picked up the big wicket of Rohit Sharma (64 off 44) after Pathum Nissanka took a splendid running catch towards his right from the backward point region.
A few overs later, Jeffrey Vandersay found the outside edge of Shubman Gill’s bat before Kamindu Mendis flung at full stretch at first slip to grab hold of the ball with his right hand, completing a great catch. With that, Shubman Gill was dismissed for 35 off 44, an innings which included just three fours.
After the openers lost their wickets in quick succession, the Indian batting lineup fell away drastically in front of a great spell of leg spin bowling from Jeffrey Vandersay. They lost six wickets for just 50 runs, finding themselves struggling at 147/6 with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar new to the crease while chasing a 241-run target.
As of this writing, Jeffrey Vandersay has figures of 6/26 in seven overs to his name, looking to bowl Sri Lanka to a famous victory at home.
