Kapil Dev, the Indian ODI World Cup winning captain, has urged the BCCI to help his teammate Anshuman Gaekwad financially in his battle with blood cancer. He and his Indian teammates are also ready to donate their pension amount to the noble cause if the family of Anshuman Gaekwad allows them to do it.
As per the report from Sportstar, Kapil Dev was quite happy about the players capitalising on support from the BCCI in recent times, stating that Indian cricket is in a healthy state. But at the same time, the 65-year-old spoke about how it is sad and depressing to see not much being done in regard to helping Anshuman Gaekwad financially.
“I am in pain because I have played alongside Aunshu and can’t bear to see him in this state. No one should suffer. I know the Board will take care of him,” said Kapil Dev about Anshuman Gaekwad in his battle with blood cancer.
Apart from Kapil Dev, some of the other former India cricketers, who are seeking support for Anshuman Gaekwad from friends and corporates, include names like Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, and Kirti Azad. The all-round cricketer remarked, “We are not compelling anyone. Any help for Aunshu will have to come from your heart.”
“He (Anshuman Gaekwad) took blows on his face and chest when standing up to some of the ferocious fast bowlers. Now is the time for us to stand up for him. I am sure our cricket fans will not fail him. They should pray for his recovery,” said an emotional Kapil Dev.
Moreover, Anshuman Gaekwad had a 13-year career with the Indian cricket team during the 70s and the 80s, playing 40 Tests and 15 ODIs. He also coached India after his playing days in the late 90s during the captaincy days of Sachin Tendulkar.
