A year after the robbery in Punjab’s Pathankot district, which saw Indian cricketer Suresh Raina’s uncle Ashok Kumar getting murdered, a joint team of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and Punjab police have arrested the alleged mastermind behind the attack in Bareilly on Sunday.

The robbery which took place on August 19 last year saw Ashok Kumar getting killed and four members of the family getting injured. The robbers broke into the house to take out all the cash and valuables present and in the process used sticks to beat the family members. Ashok Kumar died on the spot while the other four were left severely injured.

Suresh Raina withdrew from IPL 2020 after this incident

After this incident, Chennai Super Kings vice-captain Suresh Raina withdrew from IPL 2020 which was held in the UAE. According to the police, an inter-state gang of robbers which belonged to the Chaimaar tribe from UP carried out this robbery. “Chajju Chaimaar who planned the robbery had gone into hiding in Hyderabad after committing this crime,” said STF in-charge Ajay Pal Singh. Singh said that after receiving a tip that the accused was hiding in his native village of Pachpeda in Bahedi, a joint-team raided the place and captured the accused on Sunday. He was handed over to Punjab police later.

Three members of the gang are still on the run who have disappeared to different areas of Punjab as well as different states. After the crime, an FIR was filed against unidentified people at Shahpur Kandi police station in Pathankot under multiple sections relating to murder, attempt to murder, rioting, house breaking, rioting with weapons, causing death due to house breaking.
