Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has been dealt a major blow ahead of the new season of the T20 league as their captain, Shreyas Iyer has suffered a back injury. Iyer, who was a part of India’s ODI squad for three-match series against Australia was ruled out of action as he aggravated his back injury while taking part in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce anything about Iyer’s injury, reports have claimed that the Maharashtra cricketer can be out of action for an indefinite period of time. In such a scenario, KKR will be without a captain and hence the management will already be sweating about who to appoint as their skipper.
As KKR management and fans scratch their heads, here are three names who can replace Iyer as the next KKR captain.
1. Nitish Rana
The first and foremost name that pops up when the names of Shreyas Iyer’s successors are discussed is Nitish Rana. Having been a part of the KKR setup for five years now, Rana is well aware of the happenings within the team. Also, the Delhi cricketer has done decently with the franchise and his teammates have faith in Rana. The southpaw took care of things on the field whenever Iyer was not in the middle in the previous edition. So, he is most likely to get the leadership role in case Iyer fails to recover in time.
