Kolkata Knight Riders concluded a dominant season to win IPL 2024 after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the final. With this victory, Kolkata also took home their third IPL title after triumphs in 2012 and 2014. This will also be the first title for captain Shreyas Iyer after losing in the 2020 IPL final against the Mumbai Indians.
Talking about the game, Sunrisers Hyderabad elected to bat first, after winning the toss, but instantly regretted their decision as they were reduced to 47-4 at the end of the sixth over. The SRH batting collapse continued as the first inning progressed as they were bundled out for 113-10 in 18.3 overs with Andre Russell emerging as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-23 in only 2.3 overs.
Then in the second innings, Kolkata continued their dominant batting effort to finish the game in just 10.3 overs. Though KKR lost their Most Valuable Player, Sunil Narine cheaply after which Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ventakesh Iyer put forth a 91-run stand which won the game for Kolkata.
After the game, Andre Russell was extremely emotional as he won his first IPL final. Speaking in the post-match interview, Russell said, " No words to describe [holds his tears]. It means so much. I am happy that all of us were very disciplined and worked towards one goal. This franchise has done a lot for me. It's a big gift from all of us to them."
