The Leagues Cup final is finally here, with the two MLS sides, Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami and Nashville SC set to kick off for silverware on Saturday night. Both teams had resurgent performances after droning MLS campaigns, and their clash will surely make for an exciting and memorable finale to the inaugural tournament.
Ever since Messi and the other summer signings arrived on the East Coast, Inter Miami are a far cry from the languishing team under Phil Neville that saw the herons reach the bottom of the MLS table. After the arrival of manager Tata Martino, Lionel Messi, fullback Jordi Alba and holding midfielder Sergio Busquets, the team that once scored 22 goals in 22 games has managed to reach the same number of goals in just six games under the new leadership. Inter Miami have beat clubs like Cruz Azul, Philadelphia Union, Charlotte, Dallas FC, and Orlando City FC en route to the final.
Nashville aren't a team to write off easily either as they have dispatched heavy favorites like Monterrey and Club America as well as contenders like Cincinnati and Minnesota. Nashville have had a scrappy run to the final which included numerous nervy penalty shootouts before finding their form in the quarter and semi-finals. The team’s mental cohesion and strength is something Miami will have to work hard to overcome come Sunday.
