Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami will square off against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday morning at Subaru Park, in the semi-final match of the 2023 edition of the Leagues Cup.
Every summer, MLS and LIGA MX teams suspend their regular seasons to compete in the Leagues Cup. The competition features 18 Liga MX teams and all 29 MLS teams, with top three clubs securing automatic slots in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Since the competition's inception in 2019, no MLS team has won the Leagues Cup.
Inter Miami, who have had a dismal MLS season thus far, enjoyed a great Leagues Cup, winning their group games and advancing gracefully to the knockout round after Messi’s arrival. He has scored eight goals in five games for Inter Miami so far. The 36-year-old scored the winning goal in the 86th minute as Miami defeated Charlotte 4-0 in the quarterfinal. Inter Miami will try to secure their berth in the title game with a victory over Philadelphia.
Philadelphia, on the other hand, finished second in their group and then went on to win a penalty shootout thriller against DC United in their round of 32 game. Their round of 16 game was no different, as it went down to penalties again, but Philadelphia kept their cool and sealed the match against the New York Red Bulls. The quarter-finals was against Mexico’s Querétaro, which they won 2-1.
