Indian skipper Rohit Sharma shared his opinions on the future of the Indian Test team after deciding to opt out of the fifth and the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Sydney Cricket Ground. After a poor show in the ongoing Test series down under, Rohit took a big decision by opting out of the series decider as India look to win the Test and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In his absence, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in the first Test in Perth, is back leading the side again.
Rohit Sharma gave a candid interview to Star Sports where he pointed out his opinions when asked about the potential future captain of India in Test cricket. The 37-year-old said it’s a big responsibility to lead an Indian team and a player should earn it. "Very difficult to answer this. There are a lot of good guys. But, I want to tell something to the young boys: ‘first understand the importance of cricket. Understand the gravity of international cricket’. I know they should be given responsibility. But, let them earn it. Let them play some hard-fought cricket for the next few years. Let them earn it," Rohit was quoted as saying.
Bumrah has taken his game and thinking ahead: Rohit Sharma
Speaking further, Rohit Sharma also gave examples of Jasprit Bumrah along with former Indian captains including the likes of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. The opening batter also hailed Bumrah for his performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under, and said that the fast bowler has taken his game and is thinking ahead. "See, there is Jasprit Bumrah now, before that there was Virat Kohli, before that there was MS Dhoni. Everybody earned it (captaincy). No one got it on a platter," Rohit Sharma said.
"He (Jasprit Bumrah) has a good idea of the game. He is class in the way he sets an example for others with the way he bowls. He has class. He keeps the team ahead always. I have seen him for the last 11 years. His graph has gone upwards. He has evolved a lot. He has taken his game and thinking ahead. Bowling, the entire world is seeing it. He has become very good," Rohit further added.
