Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time F1 world champion, crashed his Ferrari on day two of the pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on Wednesday, January 29. The 40-year-old, who was sharing Ferrari’s 2003 car with Monegasque teammate Charles Leclerc, reportedly lost control before it ended up in barriers, causing significant damage, but fortunately, the Briton was unhurt at the site of the accident.
Notably, as per the report from BBC Sport, Ferrari declined to share any details of the accident involving Lewis Hamilton, which went down earlier this morning at the track in Barcelona. But it is understood that the team is regarding the crash as normal since Lewis Hamilton is getting him attuned to the car he hasn’t driven prior, which is especially difficult with the certain restrictions being imposed on testing at the start of an F1 season.
Ferrari are slated to launch their car for the new season at Fiorano test track on February 19
With a limited programme in the 2023 car, which is the most recent Ferrari model being allowed to be driven by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, the accident isn’t anything out of the ordinary. As per the restrictions on testing from F1, a race driver can go a maximum of 1,000km of the TPC (Testing of previous cars) running before the new F1 season begins in two months time in Australia.
Moreover, after joining Ferrari at the start of 2025, Lewis Hamilton has already driven 30 laps in the car at the team’s Fiorano test track in Italy before arriving for a three-day pre-season testing in Barcelona. As of this writing, Ferrari are slated to launch their car for the new season at Fiorano on February 19, which is going to be a day after the F1 new season launch event at the O2 Arena in London in front of a packed crowd within exactly three weeks’ time.
