But ahead of the final clash, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner made a big statement on his future with his national side. The 35-year-old after Argentina’s 3-0 win confirmed that Sunday’s game will be his final for the side. Yes, you read it right. Lionel Messi confirmed that the FIFA World Cup 2022 Final will be his last game for Argentina.
“I feel very happy to be able to achieve this, to finish my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final,” Messi told Argentine media house Diario Deportivo Ole. “It’s many years for the next one and I don’t think I’ll be able to do it. And to finish like this, it’s the best,” he added.
Road to the final
Argentina were handed a shocking defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia in their tournament opener. The Lionel Messi-led side did not look back from that very moment as they beat Mexico (2-0) and Poland (2-0) to finish at the top of the table in Group stage.
They then went on to beat Australia in the Round of 16 clash 2-1. The South American nation then took down the Netherlands on penalties in the quarterfinal to set up a semifinal clash against Croatia at the FIFA World Cup 2022. Argentina will now see the winner of Morocco vs France in the FIFA, scheduled to take place on December 18, 2022.
