After much of the North West area in England woke up to snowfall on Sunday morning, there were doubts raised about whether the Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool will go as planned on January 5. A few hours later, the safety meetings were held about hosting the game at Anfield in regards to the weather and travel conditions before officials confirmed that the game would happen at 4:30 PM GMT.
Notably, due to the overnight snow in the North West of England, the airports were temporarily closed in Manchester and Liverpool on Sunday morning, while the forecast suggests that there will be rain showers and sleet in the area this afternoon. With that, it won’t be easy for the fans to make their way to Anfield despite the conditions being cleared for travel for both Manchester United and Liverpool fans.
Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned: Liverpool
In their statement, which was posted on the official X account, Liverpool confirmed that their upcoming Premier League fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned despite the snow in the area. They wrote, “Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions. We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”
Moreover, going into this Premier League fixture, Liverpool are firm favourites to win against Manchester United due to their insane consistency in the first half of the season, to lead the rest of the competition by six points with a game in hand. Meanwhile, Manchester United have won only one match in the last six in the Premier League, which came against rivals Manchester City 2-1 after two late second half goals at the Etihad Stadium.
The Old Trafford-based club are currently in 14th place in the Premier League with just 22 points to their name in 19 matches, a whopping 23 points behind Liverpool.
