Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh took an indirect jab at former skipper MS Dhoni. Singh came in defence of current skipper Rohit Sharma after the latter received heavy criticism for opting out of the fifth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. Notably, the Indian skipper took a massive call for the side in the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground as he told the media on the second day of the Test that he stood down for the team. Sharma also admitted that while he tried everything, nothing worked in his favour and hence, he decided to drop himself and gave the captaincy cap to Jasprit Bumrah.

Sharma found himself on the receiving end of brutal criticism for Indian cricket fans and was accused of running away when the side needed him the most. One fan slammed Sharma and named MS Dhoni as a true leader. The former spinner replied to the fan and said that he knows who ran away midway during the series and knows the exact reason behind it, which will leave everyone shocked.

Singh replied to the fan, “I know who ran away! Should I tell? Will share the reason as well. It will shock everyone.” It is understood that Singh took a jab at former teammate MS Dhoni for his retirement midway during the 2014-15 Border Gavaskar Trophy. In that series, Dhoni led the side in the second and third Test and then decided to retire, handing over the leadership role to Virat Kohli. Notably, currently the Indian side is in a similar situation, where Rohit Sharma-led India in three Test matches, but decided to opt out from the final Test.

Several rumours started doing rounds on social media, suggesting that things are not well between him and the head coach Gautam Gambhir. While there were also speculations that Sharma would be forced to retire, he cleared the rumours and said that he wasn’t going anywhere. Sharma told Star Sports on Day 2, “All the boys here are made of steel. That’s how they are built. We cannot control everything, and there’s no point wasting time or focusing on things outside our control. The boys know this well. Our focus should be on playing our game and figuring out how to win the match.”
