Edwin van der Sar, the legendary goalkeeper of Manchester United, suffered a brain haemorrhage on July 7, Friday. Ajax Amsterdam football club announced that the 52-year-old is in stable condition currently in a hospital, after getting admitted to the intensive care unit.
According to reports, the former Netherlands footballer, van der Sar is being treated for bleeding around his brain in Croatia, where he was on holiday.
During his football days, he managed to win the Premier League and Eredivisie four times with Manchester United and Ajax Amsterdam respectively. Edwin van der Sar also lifted the Champions League once with both football clubs.
In a statement on their official Twitter account, Ajax Amsterdam football club revealed the condition of the 52-year-old, which read, “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar had bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
Notably, after his retirement from playing active football in 2011, Edwin van der Sar joined Ajax Amsterdam in a backstage role in 2012 and became chief executive of the club’s board in 2016. After an outstanding 11-year association with the club, he decided to step down from his position, because of a tough last season where they finished third in the Eredivisie and missed out on the Champions League.
