Manchester United won their first major women’s trophy as they recorded a dominant performance over Tottenham Hotspur to lift the Women’s FA Cup at Wembley. With the win, they ended a disappointing season by winning the first trophy just six years after their foundation as a professional team. Not only this, but Manchester United also became the first new winner of the Women’s FA Cup since Manchester City in 2017, and the 18th overall team to do so.
Ella Toone’s first-half stoppage goal gave the eventual winners an early lead in the game. Toone picked the ball up in the center circle and cut right before unleashing a stunning shot into the top corner of the opposite net. It marked Toone’s 53rd goal for the Man United Women’s team. Later in the second half, Rachel Williams scored another header to further extend the team’s lead.
United’s third and fourth goals came from Lucia Garcia, and crushed Tottenham’s effort by registering a 4-0 win. This was Hotspur’s first-ever final of the tournament. Not only this, but it was also the biggest win margin in the contest since Arsenal beat Leeds United 5-0 in 2006. The victory would give a major boost to MarcSkinner, who has been on the receiving end of criticism for failure to integrate new signings and his lack of flexibility when it comes to team selection.
At earlier games of Man United, fans have shown their disappointment with ‘Skinner Out’ banners. As a manager, it was his first victory in the third attempt, after the side lost 1-0 against Chelsea last year and in 2017, when he was Birmingham City manager.
