Ace Indian shooter, Manu Bhaker, who became the first Indian athlete to win two Olympic medals in a single edition of the Summer Games, is set to be India’s flagbearer at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, a confirmation by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is still awaited, sources informed PTI on this development.
It is to be noted that Bhaker, who opened India’s medal tally at the ongoing Games, became the first female shooter from India to win an Olympic medal. While she won her and the country’s first in women’s 10m air pistol event, she doubled the joy after winning another bronze medal with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
Speaking during the ongoing Games, an IOA official told PTI, “Yes, Manu has been chosen to the flag bearer. She has done exceptionally well and deserves the honour.” Although Manu Bhaker is highly likely to hold the flag at the closing ceremony, the IOA is yet to announce the male flagbearer for the country.
PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal honoured to be India’s flagbearer at Paris 2024
During the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, it was two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and veteran table tennis player Sharath Kamal who led the charge as India’s flagbearers. The two senior athletes led India at the parade of the Nations on River Seine on Friday, July 26 earlier at the Games.
Apart from the two, there were some 70-off athletes along with the members of support staff who joined Sindhu and Kamal for the grand opening ceremony, which was held in a 6km stretch along river Seine from Austerlitz Bridge to Trocadero.
