In the 20th match of IPL 2025, RCB got a historic win against MI at the Wankhede stadium. A combined effort from the bowling and batting unit of the Bangalore franchise was enough to come away with a slim 12-run victory against Mumbai at their home ground. With this, RCB also registered their first over MI at Wankhede after 2015. The victory marks the third win for RCB in this 2025 season where they have been a force to reckon with while MI’s misery only piles on as they suffer their fourth defeat of the season.
For the unversed, MI won the toss and chose to bowl first in a match that would mark the much-awaited return of their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah. RCB faced an early jolt when opener Phil Salt was cleaned up by Trent Boult for just 4 runs in the very first over. However, that turned out to be one of the few bright spots early on for MI, as Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal took charge of the innings with a 91-run partnership for the second wicket. Even though Padikkal had to walk back after being dismissed for 37, Kohli continued to build the innings with another 48-run partnership with Rajat Patidar before being dismissed for 67 runs by MI skipper Hardik Pandya.
As the innings progressed, RCB unleashed their firepower with skipper Patidar stitching another 69-run partnership with Jitesh Sharma before being taken out by Trent Boult for 64 runs. Middle-order batter Jitesh Sharma played a blistering cameo, hammering four sixes and two fours, ensuring RCB crossed the 220-run mark and finished on a high.
Brilliant all-round performance from RCB ensures third victory of IPL 2025
MI had a rather slow start to the innings with just above 80 runs in the first 10 overs losing impact player Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks. Although Surya Kumar Yadav and Tilak Varma had added some decent runs to the scoreboard, the momentum of MI’s innings changed in the 12th over when Surya Kumar Yadav walked out to make way for Hardik Pandya. The MI skipper came out like a man on a mission smashing 2 fours and 1 six in his first five deliveries. Accelerating the pace of MI’s innings Pandya helped Tilak Varma gain his confidence back too as they went on to stich an 89-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
But the turning point came in the death of the innings when Tilak Varma got dismissed for 56 in the 17th over by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar followed by the dismissal of skipper Hardik Pandya after a quick-fire 42 by Josh Hazelwood. With two sixes from Santner and Naman Dhir in the last two overs, a last bit of hope was still lingering for MI fans but Krunal Pandya’s brilliance in the last over by picking up 3 wickets was enough for RCB to steal a close 12 run victory at the Wankhede.
