The jacket worn by the American basketball legend Michael Jordan during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona after winning the gold medal has been sold for approx $1.512 million. The auction for the jacket began in May, and it was assumed that the garment would be sold for at least one million, but it has finally exceeded the estimated price. Jordan was wearing the jacket when he went to the podium, along with his teammates to collect the gold medal.
The Reebok-branded jacket features the stripes and stars of the United States flag, along with the USA embellished on the front and Olympic rings on the back. The former NBA public relations executive for more than three decades, Brian McIntyre had the jacket with him.
Notably, Jordan had signed a contract with Nike in 1984, and it was the reason he didn’t wear the jacket by Reebok. However, when the U.S. The Olympic Committee told him that he must wear it to collect the medal. Jordan agreed but had a US flag over his shoulder to hide the Reebok logo.
The NBA great, while stepping off the podium, took the jacket off and threw it off, and later gave it to the NBA manager. When Mclntyre insisted on returning the jacket a few years later, Jordan dismissed the idea and signed it for McIntyre. He wrote, "To Brian, thanks for everything, Michael Jordan." 29 years later, McIntyre auctioned off the jacket for more than its estimated price, at $151,200.
Notably, the 60-year-old, who is considered the greatest basketball player of all time, was an integral part of what went by the name “Dream Team” for it starred some of the biggest NBA names. The team had beaten Croatia in the final to clinch the gold at the Barcelona 92 Games.
