Mercedes on Thursday announced former Haas driver Mick Schumacher as its Formula One reserve driver for next season. Schumacher, son of seven-time World Champion Michael  Schumacher,  will attend every grand prix as back up driver for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Notably, Michael Schumacher also raced for Mercedes from 2010-12.

“I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me,” Schumacher said.

Team Principal, Toto Wolff also welcomed Mick and said that the youngster is a brilliant driver.

Mick is a talented young driver and we’re delighted to have him join the team,” Wolff said.

“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula One under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise”, Wolff added.

Young Schumacher joined Ferrari’s young driver program in 2019 and competed in Formula Two for two seasons with the Prema Racing team. He then  made his Formula One debut in 2020 with Haas and started 43 races but scored just 12 points.
