Mitchell Marsh, the Australian T20I captain, who was ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a back injury, is set to make his return to competitive cricket during the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The all-rounder, who signed with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2025 season for INR 6.50 Crore, is expected to play as a pure batter for the franchise since he isn’t fully ready to bowl yet.
Notably, Mitchell Marsh suffered lower back pain at the start of the year, and because of that, he got sidelined from cricket on January 31, ending his domestic season prematurely, while forcing him to not take part in the Champions Trophy. After resting and recovering for the past month or so, the 33-year-old has started to bat again, and as per SportsTiger sources, he is targeting the IPL as his return.
Mitchell Marsh is expected to open the batting for LSG in IPL 2025
In the absence of Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s batting lineup had to draft in different openers to accompany Travis Head, which wasn’t ideal for them in their bid to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Ultimately, the tournament campaign for Australia ended in Dubai when the Indian cricket team defeated them in the semi-final by four wickets with 11 balls to spare before they clinched the coveted trophy in the final against New Zealand.
The presence of Mitchell Marsh is vital for the LSG plans as they don’t have a top-quality opening batter in their squad except Aiden Markram, the South African T20I captain, who both have experience of performing well in the IPL at the top of the order. Under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, under whom Mitchell Marsh has already played for Delhi Capitals (DC), the Australian all-rounder will be looking to give his best with the bat especially when he is not going to bowl for them in the IPL 2025 in all likelihood.
LSG will coincidentally begin their IPL 2025 campaign against DC in Visakhapatnam on Monday, March 24, in an evening clash.
