India pace spearhead Mohammed Shami experienced an injury scare during Bengal’s Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy (SMAT) match against Madhya Pradesh on Friday, November 29 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium C in Rajkot. The Indian pacer seemed to have suffered a discomfort in his back while bowling, but was quick to get back on his feet and complete his spell of four overs.
It is to be noted that Mohammed Shami has been out of competitive cricket since ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The 34-year-old, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 50-over World Cup, underwent a surgery earlier this year and has been out since then. However, he was set return in the New Zealand Test series, but further concerns delayed his return in the national jersey. Shami was then set to return for the highly-anticipated five-match Test series against Australia, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely montoring his fitness, with the Indian pacer featuring in domestic tournaments.
Mohammed Shami bowls full spell despite injury scare in SMAT 2024
With several reports confirming that Shami is set to fly out to Australia for the BGT 2024-25, his injury scare came at a crucial juncture. According to reports citing Sportstar, Shami suffered the injury scare in the penultimate over of Madhya Pradesh’s innings while defending a target of 190 runs. While attempting to stop the ball, Shami had a fall that appeared to jerk his lower back as the pacer was seen clutching to his back in discomfort.
Seeing this, the medical team was quick to rush to the Indian pacer. However, after multiple checks, Shami reportedly completed his full spell. Moreover, Shami’s injury is closely being monitored by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as NCA’s head of Centre of Excellence’s medical panel, Nitin Patel also monitored him.
Furthermore it has to be seen that Shami made his competitive return in SMAT, completing four wickets. The Bengal pacer’s best performance in SMAT 2024 came against Hyderabad, where he claimed three wickets while conceding 21 runs in his bowling spell.
