Indian tennis prodigy Sumit Nagal's historic Monte Carlo Masters 2024 campaign ends in agony as the 26-year-old goes down to the 7th-seeded Holger Rune by 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at Court Rainier III. The defeat meant an exit from the historic tournament for Nagal while Rune advances to the third round in the clay court event.
In a rain-hit delayed match between the two players, Rune easily went past the Indian by a 6-3 margin to take a lead in the round of 32 games. In the second set, it was the Indian stalwart’s turn to flip the tide as he took the World No.7 by a 6-3 margin, thus equalizing the contest.

In the deciding third set, both players went neck-to-neck before Rune took down Nagal by 6-2 to clinch the second round and advance to the third round. The Danish veteran now faces Grigor Dimitrov in the next round. Despite being eliminated from the prestigious clay court event, Sumit created some unique records on his way as he became the first-ever Indian to win a main draw game in the Monte Carlo Masters 1000.
Nagal qualifies for French Open main draw in men’s singles
Following his recent remarkable performances, India’s highest-ranked tennis ace Sumit Nagal has secured a spot in the main draw of the men’s singles event in the French Open 2024. He became the first tennis player after Prajnesh Gunneswaran to book a place in the main draws of the French Open from India.
The prestigious clay-court Grand Slam is set to take place from May 20 to June 9 this year.
