Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim is the latest to join the long list of injuries in the Tigers camp. The 36-year-old is set to miss the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting March 22 in Sylhet. This development was communicated by Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan after the team’s 2-1 ODI series win.
Speaking at the post-match interaction, the Bangladesh physio confirmed that Rahim will take at least three to four weeks to recover from the fracture and will thus miss the two-match Test series. “After the match, Mushfiqur underwent an X-ray examination in Dhaka, which revealed an avulsion fracture on MIP joint of his right thumb,” Bayjedul said.
“He is currently undergoing conservative management for his injury and is expected to be sidelined for around three to four weeks, consequently ruling him out of participation in the Test series against Sri Lanka,” he further asserted.
It is to be further noted that the 36-year-old Rahim sustained the injury during the second over of the third ODI in Sylhet when he was struck on his right thumb on a delivery bowled by Taskin Ahmed. However, the team physio worked on him, Rahim resumed the wicketkeeping duties and even played an unbeaten 37-run knock.
However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is yet to announce their squad for the two match Test series, they will also now have to look at Rahim’s replacement. Talking about the upcoming Test series, while the first Test will be played from March 22 to 26 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, the second Test will be played from March 30 to April 3 in Chattogram.
