Bangladesh's star batter Najmul Hossain Shanto, will miss the remainder of Asia Cup 2023 due to a hamstring injury sustained during Bangladesh's game against Afghanistan. According to the BCB, Shanto would be sent back home to start his recovery in order to be ready for the ODI World Cup, scheduled for next month.

Notably, Shanto sustained the injury during a match against Afghanistan earlier this week, according to Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan. In the latter stages of his innings, the 25-year-old did seem to be having trouble, but he persisted in batting till he was out for 104 despite feeling some discomfort. He didn't, however, come out to the field in the second innings.

Bangladesh’s physio revealed in a statement that Shanto had complained of hamstring pain during batting and hence could not field. The team had an MRI scan done which confirmed a muscle tear. "As a precaution, Shanto will not take any further part in the tournament and will be returning home to start rehab and prepare for the World Cup," he quoted.
The left-handed, who scored 89 runs in the tournament's opening match against Sri Lanka before scoring a century against Afghanistan, is currently the highest run scorer. Notably, Litton Das has joined the side in Lahore ahead of the Super 4s.
Talking about the ODI World Cup 2023, Bangladesh is set to open their campaign against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on October 7.
