Dutch striker Wout Weghorst expressed shock and disappointment with Lionel Messi’s reaction after the second quarterfinal at the FIFA World Cup 2022. This fixture between Netherlands and Argentina will go down in history as a game full of high intensity-action and drama.
Both teams fought for every inch and in the end, it was the Argentines who clinched the win and advanced to the semi-finals. But a moment after the game went viral as Messi was seen verbally abusing Weghorst as he walked over to shake his hand.
While speaking to the Dutch media, the Beşiktaş frontman talked about how Messi’s actions were disrespectful and had baffled him. He said, “I wanted to shake his hand after the game. I have a lot of respect for him as a soccer player, but he threw my hand to his side and didn’t want to talk to me. My Spanish isn’t very good, but I think said disrespectful words and that disappoints me.”
The former Burnley striker was the Netherlands’ saviour in the quarterfinal as he scored twice in the dying moments of the game to take the quarterfinals in the penalty shootout. In the 83rd minute, Weghorst scored a trademark header to make the score 2-1.
Then in deep extra time, he scored one of the most innovative goals in World Cup history to draw the game. But unfortunately for Wout Weghorst and the Netherlands, they missed the opening two penalties which allowed Argentina to clinch the win and book a semi-final bout against Croatia.
Going back to the game, FIFA has started a disciplinary case against Argentina for the players’ actions after their World Cup quarterfinal match against the Netherlands. The football governing body cited “order and security at matches” in its disciplinary code as it charged Argentina football federation.
