The newly-crowned World Champion D Gukesh is set to clash against the world’s highest-rated player Magnus Carlsen at the Norway Chess tournament in 2025. The tournament is set to take place in Stavanger, Norway, from May 26 to June 6, 2025. Needless to say, the showdown between the two best players of the chess world will be an unmissable spectacle for fans all across the globe. Gukesh, world’s youngest World Champion has had a spectacular year so far. 

The year saw Gukesh winning the Tata Steel Masters, which was followed by leading India to gold at the Chess Olympiad. Later, he stormed through the Candidates Tournament before he took down Ding Liren and clinched the ultimate title of the World Chess Championship title in Singapore. In his upcoming challenge, the 18-year-old will be up against Magnus Carlsen, who earlier criticised his win at the elite competition.

Excited to face the strongest players in the world: D Gukesh

The Indian chess superstar reflected on his forthcoming challenge and expressed his excitement. He said, "I'm excited to face the strongest players in the world again in Norway, and also the Armageddon will be fun.” Notably, Gukesh finished third in the 2023 edition of the tournament. Norway Chess is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. It features a double round-robin format with six top players including male and female stars. 

It has a unique tie-break system, which includes fast-paced Armageddon games. Speaking about the importance of the clash between Gukesh and Carlsen, Kjell Madland, founder and tournament director at Norway Chess said, "This matchup is truly unique, and it's thrilling to see the World Champion face off against the world's highest-rated player.
