Mason Mount, the Chelsea midfielder who is set to join Manchester United for £60m, will wear the prestigious No.7 jersey at his new club. It was expected from the fans that the young star Alejandro Garnacho will inherit the number from Cristiano Ronaldo but it was given to Mount. Some fans have been critical of this decision while some say giving Garnacho the number would have put unnecessary pressure on the 19-year-old.

The No.7 shirt has been worn by some of the greatest players in United’s history, such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the shirt has also been a curse for some of the recent occupants, such as Alexis Sanchez, Memphis Depay, and Angel Di Maria, who all failed to live up to the expectations at Old Trafford.

Many believed that Garnacho was the deserving candidate for the number and would successfully break the curse as in his limited time with the first team he has been one of the bright sparks in the Reds squad. In the 2022-23 season, the winger had three goals and two assists and also debuted for the Argentina national team.

However, Garnacho himself is undeterred as he has already given his approval to his new teammate by liking the post in which Mount’s number was unveiled.

Mount, who has scored 33 goals and provided 37 assists in 195 appearances for Chelsea and won the Champions League in 2021, is United’s first signing of the summer and will sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford. Mount will be looking to get settled at his new club and will certainly provide the Reds with more depth in the midfield.
