On Thursday, March 6, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) Round of 16 first leg at the Estadio de Anoeta. Following a pulsating contest, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim commented about how the decision-making of the players in the final third wasn’t the best for them sometimes before looking forward to the highly-important second leg in a week’s time at Old Trafford.

Notably, in a UEL knockout match dominated by Manchester United for the first hour, the opening goal came in the 57th minute through Joshua Zirkzee. But, in just 13 minutes time, Real Sociedad equalised with a penalty conversion from Mikel Oyarzabal, which was awarded following review by the video assistant referee (VAR) for a handball by the Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Our decision-making in the final third was sometimes not the best: Ruben Amorim

Manchester United, who had failed to take their chances in the first half, were about to lose late into the second half added time with Orri Oskarsson’s goalbound effort, but goal-keeper Andre Onana pushed it away to save his team on the night. In his post-match chat, Ruben Amorim remarked, as per Republic World, “Our decision-making in the final third was sometimes not the best, but we had good moments.”

“It’s going to be a different game at Old Trafford and the pressure is going to be on us. We have to be ready,” he added. The Manchester United manager was also critical about a key moment in the match involving his striker Rasmus Hojlund and Diogo Dalot, “One thing for sure is they are really anxious to score goals and to win games so they are doing all the best. And sometimes they want the best way in that position but are not deciding the best way in their position.”

The second leg of the UEL Round of 16 tie between Manchester United and Real Sociedad will be played on Thursday, March 13, at Old Trafford.
