Tennis legend Novak Djokovic lost his first match in the United States since 2021 at the Western and Southern Open in Ohio on August 15, Tuesday. Djokovic partnered with Nikola Cacic for the men’s doubles match against Jamie Murray and Michael Venus. However, Djokovic-Cacic fell to their rival partners 6-4, 6-2. This was World No. 2 seeded star’s first competitive match after his defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.
This was the Serbian's return to the country after missing out on several events due to Covid-19 vaccine restriction.
Though the defeat in the doubles came unexpectedly for him, Djokovic is set to begin his singles’ campaign in the tournament on August 16, Wednesday. The 23 Grand Slam winner will go head-to-head against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Speaking of the tournament, this will be for the first time in 20 years that a Masters 1000 tournament is hosting top 20 players.
Talking of the World Number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, the 20-year-old clashed against Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the Round of 32. With his victory in a hard-fought battle, the Spaniard registered his 50th win of the season. Alcaraz became the fourth player in men’s singles history to register 50 wins in two consecutive seasons under the age of 21.
After winning the first set, the 20-year-old lost the second set. After almost losing the match, Alcaraz bounced back in the game and clinched the victory 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
