The reigning champions of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, England are having a dismal outing in the ongoing tournament. Having lost three of the four games played so far in the tournament, the Jos Buttler-led side are reeling in the bottom half of the points table with just two points in their kitty.
While their first loss came in the tournament opener against the 2019 runners-up, New Zealand, they then were a part of the first upset of the ongoing edition as Afghanistan beat the Three Lions in Delhi by 69 runs. Their most recent loss came against South Africa on October 21 at the Wankhede Stadium, getting defeated by the biggest margin of 229 runs.
Meanwhile, during their loss against the Proteas, the England side also suffered a massive blow on Reece Topley, who sustained an injury while attempting to field a straight drive from Rassie van der Dussen. While the England pacer walked off the field, he later returned and even bowled a couple of overs, but did not take the field to bat for the side.
However, the suspected broken finger did raise a lot of concerns on the possibility of the pacer missing a few matches, England Head Coach Matthew Mott however confirmed that Jofra Archer, who has travelled with the side as a reserve will not be called in as his replacement.
“Jof is actually not going to be considered for selection,” Mott confirmed as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. “He’s come out, he’s reported to the medical staff, but he’s not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign,” he added.
The Three Lions will next take on Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 27.
