The reigning champions, England are currently in India for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. While the Three Lions are coming into the tournament having won the 2019 edition, beating New Zealand, the side has been seen struggling. The Jos Buttler-led side currently are placed in the bottom half of the points table, having won only one game from the four matches so far.

While they will next see Sri Lanka in their fifth match at the ODI World Cup, the English side has been handed a massive blow as their star pacer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a finger injury. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday, October 22 in an official statement confirmed the departure of the fast bowler.

“England and Surrey seamer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the ICC Men's World Cup after fracturing his left index finger during England’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday”, it read. “Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury. Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours,” the statement further added.
However in the statement, the ECB also revealed that a replacement will be announced soon in due course of time.
England will next take on Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 26 before taking on India at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 29.
