With less than 10 days to the start of the much-awaited ODI World Cup 2023 in India, New Zealand pacer Tim Southee has been cleared to join the squad for the marquee event. The 2023 edition of the Cricket World Cup will be played entirely in India from 5th October till 19th November across 10 different venues.

The runners up of the 2019 edition of Cricket World Cup took to confirm the update on social media ahead of the team’s departure for India. “Tim Southee’s been cleared to join the BLACKCAPS in India later this week as he continues to progress his recovery from surgery on his fractured right thumb,” the official handle of New Zealand Cricket wrote on Twitter. They further added that “as contingency, pace bowler Kyle Jamieson will also join the World Cup squad in India this week to train.”

It is to be noted that the 34-year-old Kiwi pacer had dislocated and fractured his thumb while attempting a catch in ODI match against England. While he missed the final match and underwent a surgery on last Thursday.

New Zealand will take on England in the tournament opener on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, before that the Kane Williamson-led side will take on Pakistan on September 29 in a warm-up fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, followed by another warm-up fixture scheduled against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on October 2.
