After a dramatic 2019 ODI World Cup final between England and New Zealand, ICC were forced to make changes in their laws for the super over in cricket. Notably, England ended up winning that nail-biting final on a boundary count when the match and the subsequent super over ended in a tie. According to the new rules of cricket, if the first super over ends in a tie then it will be followed by an  another super over until there is a decisive winner. After almost one year of this rule coming in existence, the fans finally saw two super overs in cricket during a match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium during IPL 2020.

The nail-biting match between MI and KXIP took place on October 18, 2020. After the match and the subsequent first super over ended in a tie, KXIP went on to defeat MI in the second super over. Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a total of 176/6 in their 20 overs. Quinton de Kock top scorer with 53(43) runs, while Kieron Pollard (34* off 12) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (24* off 12) added finishing touches to the innings.

KL Rahul played captain’s knock as KXIP equalled MI’s total

Coming to chase the target of 177 runs, skipper KL Rahul took charge of innings for Kings XI Punjab. With wicket falling from the other hand, Rahul took the innings forward with a captain’s knock of 77(51) runs with seven fours and three sixes. However, the opening batter got out in the 18th over with his team needing 24 runs in the remaining 15 balls. Deepak Hooda also tried to take his team down the line with an unbeaten 23*(16) runs. On the last ball of the innings, Chris Jordan (13 off 8) was run out as KXIP finished on 176/6, same as MI.

In the super over, Jasprit Bumrah didn’t let KXIP batter hit big shots as they could only score 5/2 in six balls. Defending a target of just 5 runs, Mohammed Shami shone KXIP as MI also finished on 5/1 in their six balls. With that, first-ever double super over began as MI batters arrived to the crease to bat for the third time in same match, scoring 11/1 in six balls. In reply, Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal finished the job for KXIP scoring 15 runs in just four balls, finally ending almost 5-hour long T20 match in their team's favour.
