Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden is celebrating his 53rd birthday on October 29, 2024. Known for his fierce batting style, Hayden was major performer in the Australian batting order in the 90s and 2000s. He was a part of Australia’s ODI World Cup winning campaign in 2003 and 2007 respectively. Matthew Hayden amassed 659 runs in the 2007 ODI World Cup, to find himself third in the list of most runs in a single World Cup edition.

With over 8000 runs in Test cricket and 6000+ runs in the ODI format, Matthew Hayden was among the best batters from Australia at the turn of the millennium, playing a big role in the domination of the Australian cricket team during that period. His best Test score of 380 runs versus Zimbabwe is still the second highest by a player in a Test innings after Brian Lara’s 400 runs. Let’s have a look at his career records.

3rd Fastest to 5000 Test Runs: Matthew Hayden is the third fastest player in the world, and the fastest player from Australia, after Don Bradman to reach the milestone of 5000 runs in Test cricket. The left-hander achieved the feat in his 95th Test innings against Sri Lanka in Cairns in July 2004.

2nd Highest score by a batsman in a Test innings: Matthew Hayden's 380 runs off 437 balls in a Test match against Zimbabwe in Perth in October, 2003, was the highest score by a batsman in a Test innings at that time. However, Hayden was surpassed by Brian Lara as the Caribbean smashed 400 runs in a Test innings shortly afterwards. Now, Hayden’s 380 run-knock is the second highest score in a Test innings.

3rd Most Runs in a single World Cup edition: Matthew Hayden amassed 659 runs from 11 matches during Australia’s ODI World Cup  triumph in 2007. The former Australian cricketer is now the third highest scorer in the single edition of the ODI World Cup, after Virat Kohli’s 765 runs in 2023 and Sachin Tendulkar’s 673 runs in 2003.
