Defending Wimbledon and Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz suffered a 6-7, 6-7 loss against World Number Two Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the Final of the Men's Singles Tennis event at the Paris Olympics 2024. With this victory, Djokovic won the first Olympic gold in his illustrious career. The duo faced off against each other in the recent Wimbledon final where the young Spaniard completed a dominant win.
At the Philippe Chatrier court, the battle lines were drawn from the opening game as the veteran Djokovic took a 2-1 lead in Set 1 before Alcaraz levelled the scores 3-3 after six games. This back-and-forth continued as the first set entered a tie-breaker where the 24-time Grand Slam champion came up on top with a 7-3 scoreline.
Similarly in the second set, both competitors turned the intensity up a notch and traded games as the scoreline said 2-2 and then 3-3. This sequence continued till Game 12 as a determined Djokovic hit an incredible winner to force the tiebreaker. In the Set 2 decider, the Serbian took a 2-0 lead before Alcaraz levelled the scores at 2-2. But with the pressure on the peak, Djoker took three straight points and then clinched the Gold medal with a stunning forehand.
Earlier in the Summer Games, Carlos Alcaraz joined hands with his compatriot Rafael Nadal in the men's doubles event but the duo failed to win the top prize. After an early exit, Nadal shared a post on Instagram and thanked Alcaraz for the adventure.
