Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat won bronze medal in the men's 57kg freestyle wrestling on Friday, August 9. The Indian wrestler took down Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match. With this, Sehrawat took India's bronze medal count to five and the overall medal tally to six medals, which includes a silver.
Sehrawat gained an early lead in the bout and despite losing a few points time and again, the Indian wrestler didn't let go of his dominance in a rollerco a ster bout. Maintaining an upper hand throughout the contest, Aman took down his rival 13-5 in a thrilling contest.
Notably, Aman was up against Japanese top seed Rei Higuchi in the last-four round and was defeated by technical superiority. He lost his semifinal clash within just two minutes of the first period with the scoreline of 10-0. Speaking of his Japanese counterpart in the semifinal, Higuchi had won a silver medal in the Rio Olympics 2016 and is a two-time world champion.
Earlier, India’s lone male wrestler at Summer Games 2024 registered an impressive win over former world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania 12-0 by technical superiority to book himself a spot in the semifinal of the quadrennial tournament. The match ended with two minutes remaining with the referee warning Aman’s rival multiple times.
Aman, a 21-year-old wrestler from India won gold at the Asian Championships and is the only male wrestler from India to qualify for the Olympics. He hails from Birohar, a village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district, and had his early life marked by tragedy, with him losing both parents at the age of 11. The rise of Aman’s career was marked with his first National Championship title in 2021.
