What comes as a heartbreaking news for all the Indian fans after  Vinesh Phogat qualified for the final of women’s 50kg wrestling event  at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Indian grappler has suffered a disqualification after she failed to make the weight on Wednesday, August 7. The Indian wrestler failed to get to the weight on the morning of her gold medal match on Wednesday, which comes as a shock.

Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024 

Sources have informed that the wrestler was roughly 100 grams over the permissible limits, which led to her disqualification. As per the rule s in wrestling, Phogat will not be eligible even for a silver medal and the 50kg will only have a gold and a bronze medal. However, she was able to fulfil the weight criteria for her bouts on Tuesday and had to stay within the limit until the final, but have failed to abide by the same, leading to her disqualification. 

According to the sources quoted by The Indian Express, the wrestler was approximately two kilos above her weight on Tuesday night and did everything possible to meet the criteria, but all of it didn’t prove enough. Although it further adds that the Indian delegation has pleaded for some more time to give her a chance to shed the last 100 grams, but the officials did not agree. 

It is to be noted that this isn’t the first time Vinesh Phogat has found to get into the weight in the 50kg category. She faced a similar fate at the Olympics qualifiers where she narrowly missed the cut.
