Star England batter Joe Root continued his golden form in Test cricket in 2024. The right-hander made the headlines by scoring his 35th century in the longest format for England on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test against Pakistan at Multan Cricket Stadium. With the help of his 176*(277) runs along with Harry Brook’s knock of 141*(173), England are now on the verge of surpassing Pakistan’s first innings score of 556 runs at the end of the third day of the Test match. England finished day 3 at a score of 492/3, trailing 64 runs against Pakistan
Resuming the play with 96/1, Joe Root and Ben Duckett added 17 more runs before Zak Crawley got out after scoring 78(85) runs with 13 boundaries. After that, Ben Duckett joined Root as the duo added another 138 runs together before the fall of the third wicket. Duckett also missed his hundred by 16 runs as the left-hander got out after scoring 84 runs off 75 balls hitting 11 boundaries. Root was then joined by Harry Brook as they both didn’t let any wicket fall for the rest of the day.
Joe Root surpasses Alastair Cook to score most Test runs for England
After the fall of the third wicket at the score of 249 runs, Joe Root and Harry Brook took the innings forward and put up an unbeaten partnership of 243 runs for the fourth wicket by the end of day 3. Root remained unbeaten on 176 runs off 277 balls with 12 boundaries, while Brook has scored 141 runs off 173 balls with 12 fours and one six so far. With his knock, Joe Root achieved several milestones in his Test career.
Joe Root surpassed former English skipper Alastair Cook to become all-time highest run scorer for England in Test cricket. The right-hander has now 12578 runs to his name from 147 matches in Test cricket. Apart from that, Root has now also more Test centuries than legendary cricketer including Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Mahela Jayawardene and Younis Khan. With 35 hundreds, Root has now also scored most centuries in Test cricket among active cricketers.
