In the first T20I of the five-match series, New Zealand fast bowling pair of Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy ran through the Pakistan batting lineup, taking seven wickets between themselves at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The impressive bowling spells from both Jamieson and Duffy helped the BlackCaps bundle out the visitors for 91 runs in 18.4 overs before the top order of New Zealand chased down the runs with nine wickets in hand and 59 balls to spare.

After Michael Bracewell ,the captain of New Zealand put Pakistan into batting first, Kyle Jamieson bowled a wicket-maiden to start off the innings, dismissing Mohammad Haris on the last ball of his over. In the second over, Jacob Duffy got the wicket of Hasan Nawaz without troubling the scorers, reducing Pakistan to 0/2 in 1.2 overs before his opening bowling partner picked up the wicket of Irfan Khan for one, which meant that the visitors were 1/3 in 2.2 overs.

In his third over of the opening spell, Kyle Jamieson took the third wicket, sending Shadab Khan back into the pavilion for three runs, which meant that Pakistan were 11/4 in the fifth over. After a partnership of 46 runs between captain Salman Agha and Khushdil Shah, New Zealand struck back with two quick wickets, including one from Jacob Duffy of the latter, following which Pakistan never recovered in their innings.

Jacob Duffy ended up taking two more wickets of Shaheen Afridi and Abrar Ahmed, cleaning up the Pakistan tail, and registering figures of 4/14 in 3.4 overs, while his opening bowling partner Kyle Jamieson took three wickets for just eight runs with one maiden in four overs. In the run chase, Tim Seifert got off to a flyer, scoring 44 runs in 29 balls with seven fours and one maximum.

After that, Finn Allen and Tim Robinson took New Zealand over the line while staying unbeaten, to achieve a comfortable win, which gave their team a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
