Sri Lanka registered their lowest-ever total in Test cricket as South Africa bowled them out for just 42 runs on day two of the ongoing first Test at the Kingsmead in Durban. For South Africa, Marco Jansen turned out to be the top performer of the day as the left-arm pacer picked up a seven-wicket haul as Sri Lanka were bowled out under 50, in reply to South Africa’s 191 runs in the first innings.
After day one was washed out due to rain with just 20.4 overs being bowler, South Africa resumed day two at the score of 80/4 with skipper Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne at the crease. Bavuma turned out to be the top scorer of the first innings with a captain’s knock of 70(117) as the Proteas were bowled out for 191 runs. In his knock, Bavuma scored nine fours and a maximum. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kamara took three wickets, while Vishwa Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya scalped two wickets each.
Marco Jansen’s deadly spell bowl Sri Lanka out for 42 runs
Coming to bat, Sri Lanka had a disastrous start as they were reduced to 16/4 in 7.1 overs with South Africa’s pace duo of Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada were all over the Sri Lankan top order. However, Sri Lanka didn’t get much relief after the top order collapse as none of the other batters could get a big score, which led to the visitors were bowled out for a mere 42 runs in 13.5 overs. For the Proteas, Jansen registered deadly figures of 7/13 in his spell of just 6.5 overs.
Along with Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee took two wickets, while Kagiso Rabada put one wicket in his bag. With a lead of 149 runs in the first innings, South Africa also got a decent start in the second innings as Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram put up an opening partnership of 47 runs. Zorzi got out after scoring 17(32) runs, while Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder were two other batters dismissed on day two, and at the close of play, South Africa had reached 132/3 total, leading by 281 runs.
