After getting bowled out for just 46 runs in the first innings, India managed to wipe out a deficit of 356 runs on the first innings against New Zealand on day four of the first Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. For India, Sarfaraz Khan went on to score his maiden Test hundred in the second innings. The right-hander got 150 runs in 195 balls, along with a 99-run knock by Rishabh Pant as the hosts tried to make a comeback in the first Test against New Zealand.
Earlier, India had a disastrous start to the Test match as they register their third lowest total in Test cricket and the lowest total in India. After that, New Zealand posted 402 on the board in the first innings, taking a massive lead of 356 runs with Rachin Ravindra top scoring with 134(157) runs. However, coming to bat in the second innings, India had a decent start as skipper Rohit Sharma (52 off 63) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (35 off 52) put up a partnership of 72 runs for the first wicket.
Rishabh Pant misses century by one run, gets out in 90s for seventh time in Tests
After the fall of both the openers, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan took the innings forward with a partnership of 136 runs for the third wicket. However, Kohli (70 off 102) on the very last ball of day three. After that, Rishabh Pant joined Sarfaraz at the crease as both the batters put up a partnership of 177 runs for the third wicket on day four. During this impressive partnership, Sarfaraz Khan also completed his maiden Test century for India. In his knock, Sarfaraz struck 18 fours and three sixes.
Moreover, after Sarfaraz Khan's wicket fell, Rishabh Pant was also looking to get a Test hundred, but he lost his wicket to Will O’Rourke for 99(105), an innings which included nine fours and five sixes. However, the fall of wicket of Rishabh Pant led to the Indian batting collapsing in a heap, losing their final six wickets for not too many, to get bowled out for 462 runs, which meant that New Zealand got a target of just 107 runs to win their first Test in India since 1988.
