Gujarat batter Urvil Patel achieved a new milestone during a match against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at Emerald High School Ground in Indore on Wednesday, November 27. Chasing a target of 156 runs, Urvil smashed 113*(35), completing his hundred in just 28 balls. With this, the right-hander smashed the second fastest hundred in T20 cricket, and the fastest by an Indian including international and domestic cricket.
Batting first, Tripura posted a total of 155 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. Opener Sridam Paul top scored with 57 runs off 49 balls, hitting four fours and as many sixes. Apart from that, Srinivas Sharath also contributed with 29(23), while Abhijit Sarkar gave finishing touches with an unbeaten 15*(7) runs. For Gujarat, Arzan Nagwaswalla took three wickets, Chintan Gaja put two in his bag, while skipper Axar Patel and Vishal Jaiswal scalped a wicket each.
Urvil Patel completes ton in just 28 balls
Coming a chase the target, Gujarat took the match away from Tripura inside 10 overs as Urvil Patel and Aarya Desai smashed an opening partnership of 150 runs in just 8.5 overs. Desai got out after scoring 38(24) with four fours and two sixes, while Urvil smashed a hundred of just 28 balls. The right-hander remained unbeaten on 113 off 35, hitting seven fours and 12 sixes as Gujarat chased the target in 10.2 overs after losing two wickets.
Urvil Patel now holds the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian player and second fastest overall. He is just one ball behind Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan who smashed a 27-ball hundred in a match against Cyprus on June 17, 2024. West Indies legend Chris Gayle come third in the list for smashing a 30-ball hundred during his iconic knock of 175* runs in the IPL 2013, while Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant scored a hundred off 32 balls for Delhi during the 2018 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
