Off spinner Washington Sundar, who was added in the Indian squad after a loss in the first Test in Bengaluru, bowled exceptionally well on Test return after more than three years versus New Zealand. The right-arm bowler took a seven-wicket haul on day one of the second Test at Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune, as India bowled New Zealand out for 259 runs in the first innings. Along with Washington Sundar, his senior teammate Ravichandran Ashwin also scalped three wickets.

After a convincing eight-wicket in Bengaluru, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first in the second Test in Pune. The visitors lost their first wicket in the form of skipper Tom Latham (15 off 22) at the score of 32 runs. After that, Will Young (18 off 45) also lost his wicket to Ravichandran Ashwin at the score of 76 runs. After that, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra put up a partnership of 62 runs for the third wicket.
