Lionel Messi’s time at Paris Sain-Germain seems to be done and dusted as the French club is having second thoughts about renewing the Argentine’s contract after it expires at the end of the season. As per reports, the club is sceptical about giving Messi another run as his performance has not been up to the mark. This comes even after PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos said last month that the club is in discussions with Messi for his extension.
According to a report in L’Equipe, PSG fans are unhappy with the World Cup winner after their Champions League exit and are divided over whether Messi should be at the Parc de Princes. This is being viewed as a major factor in the board’s decision.
Notably, Messi’s contract with PSG runs till the end of the season but he is yet to get an extension. However, the World Cup-winning captain has a few offers on his plate to consider. The Argentine forward has been linked with a lot of clubs like Inter Miami and a return to Barcelona is also being touted.
Messi joined PSG after ending a decade-long association with Barcelona in what was considered a monumental transfer in the history of the sport. However, it did not turn out the way Messi would have hoped. The striker had hot and cold seasons and hence the PSG fans were left unhappy.
Talking about Messi’s contract with PSG, is reportedly worth up to €110 ($130 million) over two years, making him one of the highest-paid footballers in the world. The salary is broken into a base salary of €70 million ($83 million) and €40 million ($47) in bonuses, including an image rights and loyalty bonus. The contract also includes a potential third-year extension.
