On Friday, April 4, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made an announcement that it will implement the Match Officials Technology (MOT) for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 edition to be played from April 11 to May 18. A total of 34 matches will be played during the 38 days of the marquee event. It will be the 10th edition of the league, and in its nine-year history, PSL is clashing with the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) for the first time. Islamabad United will defend the title under their captain Shadab Khan, who guided the side to their third trophy win in the previous season.
As per PCB, the distinguished T20 league embraced a few parts of the MOT in the previous season, but the next edition will witness its complete implementation. The technology will bring transparency in officiating games in the league. Some pivotal features of the MOT contain live umpire communication to DRS and innings timers, match logging and real-time multi-angle replays, and auto-detection of the no balls with ultra-motion cameras. This technology is expected to make the viewer experience smooth. For the first time in the league, over-rate calculations will also be accessible for viewers and teams. Umpires will be using hand-held tablets for calculating the over-rate in real time and for instant DRS triggers.
PSL Chief shows faith in MOT ahead of 2025 season
PSL Chief Salman Naseer has shown belief in MOT as he feels it will uphold disinterestedness in the competition. “HBL PSL has always seeks to introduce innovation in the league and after weeks of deliberation regarding which innovation to introduce, we can now proudly say that HBL PSL X matches will have full MOT integration. By introducing this, we will uphold fairness in every decision, providing greater clarity for officials, players and fans alike,” said Naseer.
The opening game of the PSL will take place between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on April 11. Lahore will chase their third title under their skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi. Qalandars are the only side in the league to bag two consecutive titles with their success in 2022 and 2023.
