Two-time Olympic medalist and star badminton player, PV Sindhu, along with veteran table tennis player, Achanta Sharath Kamal, will be the flag bearers for India at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Although the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had announced Sharath Kamal’s name earlier in March, but decided to postpone the announcement of the women flag bearer’s name.
Taking to X, IOA President in an official statement stated, “I am delighted to announce that India’s only woman to win two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, as the female flag-bearer alongside Table Tennis ace A. Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony.”
It is to be noted that in 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) updated its protocol, permitting one female and one male athlete of each NOC to bear the flag jointly in the opening ceremony of the Summer Games.
Gagan Narang to replace MC Mary Kom as India’s Chef de Mission
Additionally, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) also confirmed Gagan Narang as India’s Chef de Mission for the upcoming Summer Games. Narang, a veteran of four Olympic Games and a bronze medal winner in 10m Air Rifle at the 2012 London Olympics, will replace MC Mary Kom.
“Gagan Narang, four-time Olympian and 2012 Olympic Games men’s 10m Air Rifle bronze medalist, has been chosen to replace MC Mary Kom as the Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games beginning July 26,” IOA President PT Usha added in her statement.
“I was looking for an Olympic medalist to lead our contingent and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom,” she further added.
