Former cricketer turned politician Gautam Gambhir on Saturday, March 2, confirmed his decision to take a break from politics. The 42-year-old World Cup winner took to social media to confirm his withdrawal from politics in order to focus on his “upcoming cricket commitments.”
“I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!” Gautam Gambhir captioned a post on X. However, the former cricketer did not clarify if he is quitting politics, but this announcement comes as a shock with the Lok Sabha election ahead. Gambhir joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He defeated AAP’s Atishi to take the seat from the East Delhi constituency.
Gambhir, who guided IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two titles in 2012 and 2014, served as a mentor to LSG in 2022 and 2023. However, with the 17th edition of IPL fast approaching, the former cricketer will be seen back with the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise, who was roped in in last year as mentor of KKR.
