Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin shared his point of view on Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement in the middle of the recently ended Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under. Notably, the veteran Indian spinner shook the cricketing world with a sudden announcement oof his retirement after the third Test of a five-match series at Gabba, Brisbane. During his interview on a Willow Talk podcast, Haddin said that Ashwin may have announced his retirement as a disappointment for not getting picked in the playing XI during the BGT series.
R. Ashwin went on to play his last Test in Adelaide and was not picked for the third Test in Brisbane. Notably, the Indian team tired three different spinners for the three matches of the series. "The first three Test matches, they played three different spinners, so they arrived here not knowing what their game style is going to be around here. It should not be a shock when you get here, they have played here enough, they have success here so the Ashwin retiring mid-series was a funny one. I do not think we have heard the last of that yet. I think he was just jack of not getting picked," Brad Haddin was quoted as saying by Crictracker.
Ashwin sees himself as the number one spinner: Brad Haddin
Ravichandran Ashwin retired as a all-time second highest wicket taker for India in Test cricket with 537 scalps in 106 matches. Apart from that, he has also scored 3503 runs in the longest format with six hundreds. Speaking further, Brad Haddin said that Ashwin may have communicated to the team that he doesn’t want to be on the bench for the entire series.
"I think he sees himself as the number one spinner. His record is elite, and he just went, 'You know what I am not sitting on the bench. If you cannot decide that I am your best spinner, I am done. I have played enough. I do not need this.' I do not think we have heard the end of that,"Brad Haddin said.
