Former Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting and former skipper Shreyas Iyer are reportedly all set to work together in Punjab Kings in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League. As the deadline for the retentions of the forthcoming season is approaching, the internet has been buzzing with new rumours and reports every day. According to the latest report, former Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting, who joined Punjab Kings at the helm of coaching staff, is all set to reunite with Shreyas Iyer in his new franchise.
As per latest media reports, the KKR captain is all set to be released by the franchise and PBKS is interested to rope in Iyer. The reason behind this is simple, Iyer and Ponting have worked with each other in Delhi Capitals as captain and coach from 2019 until 2021 after Iyer was replaced by Rishabh Pant. In his first year of captaincy, Iyer led the side into the playoffs for the first time in seven years and the team finished third in the standings. In 2020, Iyer-led DC finished the season as runners up.
Why will Shreyas Iyer be a good fit for PBKS?
Punjab Kings are in need of a captain after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement a few months ago. While Jitesh Sharma could be a good option for the side, there is no confirmation whether or not the side will retain him. On the other hand, Sam Curran, who shouldered the responsibility of a skipper, couldn't do much. Shreyas Iyer can solve the problem the franchise has been facing.
Since he has worked with Ponting earlier, Iyer is well acquainted with his work style and it wouldn’t be much of a problem. Iyer has led a team in 70 matches and won 38 of them, which means he has a record of 56%, one of the highest in the list.
