O n Tuesday, September 10, former Delhi Capitals (DC) Head Coach, Ricky Ponting teased his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former Australian cricketer, who last featured in the IPL in 2024 with DC, hinted his return to the tournament with a new franchise after parting ways with the Rishabh Pant-led team.

Speaking during an interaction with Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports after Sri Lanka registered a comprehensive eight-wicket win against the hosts, England at the Kennington Oval in London to finish the three-match Test series with a 1-2 defeat, opened up on featuring in the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league.

A few other opportunities coming in IPL in next few weeks: Ricky Ponting

The 49-year-old, who served at the helm of the franchise (DC) for seven years, was unable to win a title for them. Although, under his coaching, he helped DC reach the final in 2020, where they lost to Mumbai Indians in the UAE. Furthermore, during the interaction, Ponting clarified that he is not looking at taking up international role as he eyes to spend more time with his family.

“An international role is not where I am right now. The last two years have been a lot busier than I wanted. This year I have coached in the MLC as well which was a lot of fun. I’ll continue to do that. That was just three and a half weeks,” Ponting said on Sky Sports. “I finished up with DC as well so there might be a few other opportunities coming in the IPL in the next few weeks. We’ll see,” he further added.

KKR likely to rope in Ricky Ponting after Gautam Gambhir’s departure

If reports are to be believed, Ponting is to succeed Team India Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Earlier this week, a report by Sangbad Pratidin stated that the 2024 champions have shortlised South Africa legend, Jacques Kallis and former Australian cricketer, Ricky Ponting as Gautam Gambhir’s replacement.
